About S.C. Red Elementary School

S.C. Red Elementary School first opened its doors in 1957 to serve families in Houston’s growing Willowbend and Willow Meadows neighborhoods. The school is named in honor of Dr. Samuel Clark Red, a pioneering Houston physician and civic leader. Dr. Red was the first person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas and played a key role in shaping healthcare in Houston. He helped establish the Harris County Medical Society and co-founded the city’s first hospital, the Houston Infirmary.

In its early years, Red Elementary quickly became a cornerstone of the community, offering a strong foundation in academics and nurturing generations of students. Originally serving kindergarten through sixth grade, the school grew alongside the surrounding neighborhoods and remained a hub for learning and connection. Even in its first year, demand was so high that students temporarily attended a neighboring school until the new campus was fully ready. Over the decades, Red has continually adapted to meet the needs of its diverse and dynamic student body.

A major milestone in the school’s history occurred in 1986 when Red Elementary was designated as a Math, Science, and Technology magnet school. This transformation brought new resources, specialized instruction, and a broader reach beyond the neighborhood. The campus was renovated in 1990 to support the expanding programs and student population. By the late 1990s, Red was one of the largest elementary schools in Houston ISD, with enrollment peaking at nearly 1,600 students. The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007 with an all-class reunion and received an official proclamation from the Houston City Council recognizing its impact on the community.

Today, Red Elementary proudly serves as a STEM Magnet School, with programming in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The program was expanded in 2012 to include a focus on engineering, giving students early exposure to problem-solving, design, and innovation. The campus fosters a hands-on, inquiry-based learning environment that prepares students to think critically and creatively. Red Elementary continues to honor its legacy while inspiring future leaders in STEM and beyond.
